Further Tests

If your tests show you have mesothelioma, you may have to have further tests to see if the cancer has spread. This is called staging. The stage of your cancer is important because it helps to decide on the best treatment. You may have

  • CT scan
  • MRI scan

You may have had either of these tests when your mesothelioma was being diagnosed. If so, you will not have to have them again.

    CT scan

This is a computerised scan using X-rays. You may be asked to have a CT scan to see if there are any signs of enlarged lymph nodes or other cancer spread. You may be given an injection of dye called ‘contrast’ before the scan. This helps to make the scan clearer to read.

    MRI scan

You may be asked to have an MRI scan. This scan can show up soft tissue more clearly than a CT scan. It uses magnetism instead of X-rays to build up a picture of the body. You cannot have an MRI scan if you have metal anywhere inside your body. You may have metal in your body if you have had a pacemaker fitted. Or if you have had a bone fracture repaired with surgery.

    After the tests

You will be asked to come back to the hospital when your test results have come through. This is bound to take a little time, even if only a day or two. You may feel very anxious during this time.
